About Us
Our mission is to humanely raise healthy animals while working within our ecosystem to responsibly steward the land and respect the humans that make it all happen.
Our animals are rotated throughout the pastures to improve soil and animal health while producing incredible and honest meat. All animals are fed an organic, non-GMO grain and we would never even think of giving anyone hormones.
Farmer Dede Boies
Dede Boies started Root Down Farm in January of 2014 and has built the pasture-based operation from the ground up. Root Down is a 54 acre stretch of land originally inhabited by the indigenous Ohlone people. The land lays at the base of the gorgeous Cloverdale Valley in Pescadero, CA, with Redwoods to the east and the Pacific Ocean just a few miles to the west. Dede knew the long, flat pastures would be ideal for raising chickens, ducks, turkeys and pigs (and guard dogs!).
In the last ten years Dede has definitely put her roots down. Her wife, Melissa (a special education teacher at the local middle & high school) joined the adventure in 2016. They welcomed their first child in early 2018 and their second in 2022. Now with a 6 year old, a 2 year old and a farm business with heaps of animals, their hands are officially full.
Dede leases the land from the Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST). Her time on the property has coincided with POST’s increasing engagement in farmland and rangeland conservation. Root Down Farm subleases to two other operations: Steadfast Herbs and LeftCoast GrassFed. The collaborations with other tenants feel like a natural continuation of Root Down Farm’s mission.
After 10 years in business, Dede remains passionate about sustainably and regeneratively raising delicious and honest meat. Since becoming a parent, Dede feels more motivated then ever to make the farm and business sustainable so her family can continue to romp through the pastures.
